Short term

Last week, renewable energy production was significantly higher than in previous weeks. Wind generation increased sharply in most countries from Wednesday onward, including in Germany and the Netherlands. As a result, prices during the afternoon hours quickly turned negative, often for 7 to 8 consecutive hours. Consequently, the average spot price was much lower than in previous weeks, averaging 55.1 €/MWh, compared to 89.9 €/MWh the week before.
Gas prices also took a step back. While they remained relatively stable around 40 €/MWh the previous week, they dropped last week, with the September contract closing nearly 3 euros lower at 36.9 €/MWh. CO2 prices fell by one and a half euros, ending the week at 71.1 €/EUA. Coal prices for the coming months decreased by about 5 euros, ranging between 106 and 109 €/Ton.
Dutch power prices for the coming months naturally fell as well. September and October became nearly 6 euros cheaper, closing at 84.4 and 90 €/MWh, respectively.
